Saturday March 7th, 1pm at the Kamloops Art Gallery

What sources can you look to for ideas and inspiration? How can you encourage an unfinished poem to become one of power and beauty? For new or experienced writers who seek direction and feedback, this workshop explores contemporary poetry as well as work from the 60ʼs, the era of Pop art. Students will write a series of poems using enjoyable and illuminating exercises and group critiques to expand imaginations and introduce the issues of craft and revision in an accessible way.

This class will be conducted through in-class writing exercises, readings, and handouts.  Students will experiment with exercises in traditional and contemporary forms.  Because poetry originated as an oral art, voice and rhythm are integral aspects of poetry; students will read their efforts aloud to the class.  This trains the ear for errors in grammar and syntax and develops music and voice in the poem. We will use for inspiration:  KAG exhibits  Pop Prints and Celebrities of the Self,  work by 60ʼs poets, music and cinema.
